Young Voices, Strong Stories

You’re Invited to Celebrate Two Projects

On Saturday 18 October 2025, Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance will open its Gallery doors to families, children, and the community for a very special afternoon of creativity, culture, and connection. Two powerful projects will launch side by side, each rooted in First Nations storytelling and the importance of amplifying young voices.

First Words First — A Children’s Bookshop Corner

Stories are the heart of culture. They carry language, values, and traditions from one generation to the next. With the launch of First Words First, Saltwater Freshwater introduces a dedicated Children’s Bookshop Corner designed to nurture a love of reading and storytelling for young people.

The space is more than just shelves of books — it is an immersive cultural experience:

  • A cozy reading nook for families to enjoy First Nations stories together
  • Language listening stations, where children can hear stories in language via QR codes
  • Interactive storytelling activities that invite children to become creators of their own narratives
  • A curated collection of books by First Nations authors and illustrators, showcasing the richness of Aboriginal voices in literature

This project creates a space where children can grow up surrounded by the stories that shape culture, identity, and belonging.

NEXTgen Markers — When Young Voices Are Seen & Heard

Culture thrives when the next generation is given space to express themselves. NEXTgen Markers does exactly that — transforming student artworks into public street art, giving visibility to young Aboriginal voices in powerful and creative ways.

Supported by Aboriginal Affairs, NSW, the project highlights the importance of young people being seen and heard, and it ensures their stories are not only preserved but also celebrated in the public domain. As their art moves from classroom to community walls, it becomes a testament to resilience, vision, and cultural pride.

The launch will feature:

  • Live radio broadcasts amplifying youth voices
  • Cultural food and music celebrating community
  • Interactive art activations, inviting everyone to engage in creative expression

NEXTgen Markers reminds us all that culture lives strong when the voices of young people are at its centre.
