A Voice For Your Community

Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance has launched a new initiative to support grassroots cultural leadership across the Mid North Coast — the Saltwater Freshwater Community Ambassador Program.

Expressions of interest are now open for Aboriginal community members from the Gumbaynggirr, Dunghutti, Biripi and Worimi Nations to join this volunteer-based program, which aims to strengthen local engagement with Aboriginal art, culture, and community initiatives.

Up to six Aboriginal people will be selected to participate in the 12-month program, walking alongside Saltwater Freshwater to share stories, strengthen cultural connections, and support the voice of community in the organisation’s work.

“This program is about lifting up community leaders — people who already contribute so much — and giving them a platform to help shape and promote Aboriginal cultural work across our region,” said Michelle Flanders, Senior First Nations Project Officer.

The Saltwater Freshwater Community Ambassador Program is a formal opportunity for individuals to represent their local Aboriginal communities in a supportive and culturally safe setting.  The program will run for 12 months, with a focus on shared leadership, cultural exchange, and direct community input.

Ambassadors will:

  • Help share Saltwater Freshwater’s programs and opportunities in their communities
  • Offer feedback and ideas to inform future projects
  • Support stronger engagement across their community
  • Attend up to three meetings annually at the Saltwater Freshwater office and gallery in Coffs Harbour (support provided)
  • Be invited to attend all Saltwater Freshwater events and exhibitions
  • Receive free access to selected ticketed events

To be eligible for nomination, applicants must:

  • Be nominated by an Aboriginal Elders Group, and
  • Be nominated by the Aboriginal community where they live, or
  • Be a respected and upstanding member of their community

We are seeking individuals who:

  • Are actively involved in Aboriginal arts and culture
  • Have a strong understanding of local community and cultural matters
