Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance is proud to announce the official reopening of The Gallery, following the completion of a major refurbishment supported through the 2023–2024 Community and Place Grants Program by Aboriginal Affairs NSW.
This significant upgrade marks a new chapter for The Gallery as a dedicated cultural space that celebrates, supports, and empowers Aboriginal artists from across the Saltwater Freshwater region — the lands of the Worimi, Biripi, Dunghutti, and Gumbaynggirr Nations.
“The Gallery is now a space our artists, community, and visitors can feel proud of — a home for Aboriginal cultural expression, storytelling, and creativity on Gumbaynggirr Country,” said a Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance spokesperson.
The refurbishment has delivered an enhanced and culturally safe environment designed to better showcase visual art, host workshops, and foster community connection. Improvements include updated lighting, new display systems, enhanced accessibility, and a welcoming interior redesign — transforming The Gallery into a high-quality venue ready to support the evolving needs of artists and audiences alike.
More than just a physical transformation, the refurbishment affirms Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance’s long-term commitment to nurturing Aboriginal creative voices on the Mid North Coast. The Gallery now stands as a dynamic meeting place — where Country, culture, and contemporary practice come together to tell powerful stories and celebrate the depth of talent across the region.
The Gallery’s reopening is launched with the exhibition:
Nyiirunba Djuyalbaa – Our Storyplace: Rivers to the Seas
Featuring works from a collective of Aboriginal artists who reflect the landscapes, waterways, and shared histories of the Gamillarray and Birpai Nations, this exhibition offers an immersive experience in cultural storytelling.
“The Gallery is the beating heart of this vision — a space where community, culture and creativity thrive, and where artists from the Saltwater Freshwater region can be seen, heard, and celebrated,” said a Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance spokesperson.
