2024 Women’s Artist Development Camp Gallery

The SWFW Aboriginal Women’s Artist Development Camp was held from 2–5 December 2024 at the stunning Yarrahapinni Youth Adventist Centre (Yarra), Grassy Head, NSW. Funded by the NSW Government through Create NSW, the camp welcomed 15 Aboriginal women from across the region, representing the Worimi, Birpai/Biripi, Dunghutti, and Gumbaynggirr Nations.

The four-day program featured a Welcome to Country by Dunghutti Elder Aunty Caroline Bradshaw and an inspiring artist talk by nationally recognised Gumbaynggirr artist Alison Williams. Participants engaged in cultural workshops including weaving with Hannah Smith, bush tucker and medicine walks with Dallas Gittins, jewellery-making with Kathy Stevens, and a healing ceremony led by Michelle Flanders. Arts Marketing insights were delivered by Skye Petho from Arts Mid North Coast, and SWFW General Manager Janan Greenwood shared opportunities within SWFW Gallery and the National Aboriginal Design Agency (NADA).

The camp offered hands-on learning, cultural sharing, skill development, and valuable networking, with participants making baskets, jewellery, and connecting over shared meals and campfires. Workshops were highly rated, with arts marketing and cultural craft sessions receiving particular praise.

Participants described the camp as inspiring, culturally safe, and professionally run. Evaluations showed strong engagement, with all respondents recommending the camp to others and highlighting the facilitators’ expertise, support, and welcoming approach.

The Aboriginal Women’s Artist Development Camp strengthened artistic skills, cultural knowledge, and community connections, reigniting passion and creativity for the women involved. One participant reflected, “This week was absolutely fantastic… every session had something unique to offer. I am so grateful I had the chance to be part of something so special.”

SWFW looks forward to continuing these cultural development programs that nurture, empower, and celebrate Aboriginal women artists across NSW.
