Step into a world shaped by the sea, culture and generations of knowledge as Torres Strait Islander artist Toby Cedar brings Stories of the Sea: Masks, Headdresses & Sculptures to The Gallery.

Through striking masks, headdresses and sculptural works, Toby shares a practice deeply connected to the ocean, cultural knowledge and the stories and teachings passed down through his Elders and family.

Toby Cedar

Toby is connected to Peiudu, Erub, Samsep Meriam Mer, Wug Village, Senpol and Zenadh Kes, with language connections to Meriam Mir and Kala Lagau Ya.

Opening at The Gallery on Saturday 10 October 2026, Stories of the Sea brings together Toby’s masks, headdresses, floor and wall sculptures, and contemporary works in an immersive installation celebrating the richness of his artistic practice.

The sea is central to Toby’s work. Sharks, turtles, stingrays and other marine life appear throughout his practice, alongside creation stories, hunting knowledge, family teachings and cultural traditions. Many of the works are grounded in stories and knowledge entrusted to Toby orally by his Elders.

Working across carving, painting, weaving and sculptural assembly, Toby draws on traditional knowledge alongside contemporary approaches to making. His works carry connections between people, place, family, ancestors and generations, while reflecting the responsibility of carrying cultural knowledge forward.

Join us for the exhibition launch on Saturday 10 October, from 11am–1pm at The Gallery.

Experience the exhibition, meet Toby and celebrate the opening of Stories of the Sea.

The exhibition continues until 26 November 2026.
